Bangkok’s Hidden Gems

Thai Food is reason enough to travel to Bangkok.

For a tourist, a traveler, or even a newly arrived expat searching for a good meal, here’s a few recommendation of best kept eateries: Ran Gan Ahan Jaan Diaw, Rod Dee Det and Ran Kuay Jap Nai Ake. You just need a little luck to make sure you arrive at your destination.

Bangkok is a city full of fantastic food, but most of its true great restaurants are difficult to find. That’s because they’re located slightly off the beaten path and known only to the locals.”

Urban Life in Downtown LA

Veering away from the Hollywood hype, Downtown Los Angeles cast its own cinematic urban life filled with its flourishing art scene, endless musical events and a budding fashion district. More so, there’s always something to discover around town, you just need to look deeper.

“New York-like in its density and mishmash, the long-blighted center has become an accessible, pedestrian-friendly destination in recent years; Angelenos walk around en masse, using their actual legs. The immense L.A. Live entertainment complex is largely responsible for this comeback, but the studiously vintage bars and imaginative restaurants that seem to open every other day are also part of the revival. Skid Row and the drifts of homeless camps haven’t vanished altogether, and the grittiness still varies by block. But this part of town is alive again, in ways that make sense even to an outsider.”

A Tour of Istanbul’s Street Food

Istanbul is one of the key tourism spots in Turkey. There are thousands of hotels and other tourist oriented industries in the city, accommodating both vacationers and visiting professionals. But the highlight of them all for food trippers is Istanbul’s street food. Istanbul can be considered bliss for  anyone who loves street food. The varieties are not only numerous, but show considerable change from region to region. There is a very important culture turning around street food in Istanbul, and all this food is also separated by those that are eaten by day and those by night.

“If you’re like me, when you travel, you like to plan your trip around food. Seeing the sights is important, I know, but having an authentic food experience gives you insights into the local culture that no amount of church- and museum-going can provide. (And mind you, I started out life as an architectural historian.)

Today, with a bit of research on the Internet anyone can scope out the best restaurants, markets, and food sources. At least up to a certain point. What about the places that fall through the cracks? The place where the guys who sell fish take their coffee break. Or where spice vendors stop mid-morning for a bowl of lentil soup.“

Hunt for Spicy Food in Shanghai

Make a mental note of these food joints before the fiery flavors take over:  Shu Fu, South Memory, Spicy Joint, Yuxin. These restaurants house the best peppery dishes in Shanghai.

For spice-loving expats, these are the meals that you should never miss when in Shanghai.

“At Shu Fu, spicy lamb is the specialty of the house, so if you love chili-covered lamb ribs, give it a try instead of heading to your usual table at Di Shui Dong.

For South Memory’s signature ying yang yu tou, or green and red chili covered fish head — the ratio of fish to chili has to be 1:1 — is essential for every table.

Spicy Joint is the most popular spicy restaurant in Shanghai, according to dianping.com. You’ll know why once you try the addictive fei teng yu (tender slices of fish in mala lava) and the drool-inducing bullfrog.

If you can endure full-on heat, venture an item from Yuxin’s Double Peppercorn menu. The ‘Double Pepper Frog’ is a favorite.

Breathtaking Views with the Best Meal of Your Life

If you’re set to feast your eyes not only on the meals set on the table, but also on the breathtaking views outside, then you’re in for the treat of your life at RAW, Huvafenfushi in Maldives, S.O.S. Anantara Seminyak in Bali, il Teatro Wynn Macau in Macau, Khmer Village House in Siem Reap, and Gulai House, The Datai in Langkawi, Malaysia.

These restaurants boast of the best ocean views, stunning greens or rolling hills, or even an orchestrated fountain in the middle of the city. It goes without saying the gastronomic delights in these dishes are just as impeccable as the views.

“Whether going barefoot down the jetty or getting there wet by a breast stroke, the Maldivian fantasy island’s RAW Huvafenfushi over-water eatery will momentarily take any appetite away.

…Spread eagle to eat atop massive daybeds on the S.O.S. Anantara Seminyak’s elongated rooftop with the Indian Ocean directly below.

…Yet even the über-sophisticates hush up inside the il Teatro Wynn Macau’s triple height dining room as water swells from the 230 foot wide exterior lake.

…Appreciate the walls-free hilltop dining room of Kahanda Kanda Galle where curves grace oversized

…Diners arrive at Amansara’s revamped village house on stilts more than a thousand years too late to watch Khmer kings in Srah Srang, the 10th century royal bathing reservoir just across the dirt path inside the grounds of Angkor Wat.

…Surrounded by virgin rainforest, Gulai House with its thatched roof establishment on Langkawi’s northwestern shore is a sight for a green lover’s sore eyes.”

What To Do in Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley has come a long way from just being known as makers of silicon chips.

These days, Silicon Valley is the Olympus of tech giants: Google, Apple, Facebook, HP, Intel, Cisco, eBay, Adobe and Yahoo, among others.

More so, Silicon Valley is becoming a cultural haven with its fine list of restaurants and bars, although if you have the means and connections, you can certainly also spend the evening browsing through some more high-tech digs.  However, most visitors will be satisfied with the tourist views, including a ride aboard an airship over the area if you so choose.

“Situated just south of San Francisco Bay, the valley was once an agricultural cradle, home to orchards and vineyards. These days, of course, it bears fruit of a different sort, as the home of tech giants like Apple, Google and Intel. Buoyed by the resilience of tech companies, the valley’s dozen or so cities, which include Mountain View and Palo Alto, have managed to sidestep the recession, continuing their shift from corporate strip malls to urban hubs. The valley now buzzes with cultural spaces, lively restaurants and a hyper-educated workforce that has no problem keeping up.”

Have a Bite of New York’s Restaurant Week

No matter what time of year you visit, New York city has something for everyone. But for the gourmet on a budget, there is one time that a visit is a must. Called Restaurant Week, upscale restaurants slash their prices so diners can have a big bite of their high-class selection.

“Started in 1992 by a group of local restaurateurs and food-industry types as a way to drum up business during that year’s Democratic National Convention, New York Restaurant Week has evolved into the single largest dining celebration in the United States.

Today, more than 250 restaurants participate, most offering a three-course prix-fixe dinner (£22) on top of a lunch deal that – at £15 – has barely risen in 18 years. Restaurant Week actually takes place over two weeks, twice a year – winter and midsummer. This summer, the recession being particularly bad, it has been extended through September.”
