Expat Books to Read

Before you head off to your next expat assignment, it may be worth your while to read a bit about the country you’ll be living in. While travel or culture guides may be helpful, they can never give a person an in depth look into the mentality and lifestyle of the citizens or expats who have made the country their home. Fortunately, there is a wealth of actual literature from other expats and local authors in nearly every country a bookworm expat can check out to get the full experience.

Here you can find a few lists of books to check out from lists on Amazon in many countries. You can look for the books at your local book shop, library, or order them right online. If you don’t see your country listed, don’t despair! Simply do a search through the lists here and you should be able to find just what you’re looking for.

Singapore, Perfect Place to Raise Children

In parenting, both parents play an equally important role in helping the child navigate his way through the most important times of his growing up years. But this proves challenging if a family is driven to uproot to a new country. But expats in Singapore, especially parents, would be happy to know that the country excels in nurturing children.

“Based on a survey recently conducted by HSBC Bank International, Singapore is the 2nd best place for expatriates to raise their kids, following Australia, which got the number one spot. This particular survey included 3,100 expats coming from fifty different countries. According to Channel NewsAsia, fifty-six percent said that their kids easily integrated in the community while sixty-five percent said that their kids easily made friends in this country.”

Learning Mandarin

China’s strength is not just seen by its sheer force in the global market. In the recently concluded World Expo in Shanghai, the world witnessed how China has re-established itself as a force to be reckoned with.

And these days, even expats are brushing up on their Mandarin. In Singapore alone, there’s a 30 percent rise in the number of expats taking a shot at learning the language.

“The most spoken language in the world, Mandarin is fast replacing Japanese as the Asian language of business.

Lawrence Foong, centre manager for the language school New Concept Mandarin said: ‘We’ve been in Singapore for the last five years and around 80 per cent of our students are expats who are working in Singapore. The number of our expat students is increasing by 20 per cent every year.’”

Singapore Opens Second Casino Resort

After much delay, Singapore’s second integrated casino resort, Marina Bay Sands, just opened its doors to the public. “Despite signs of being a work in progress with tarp-covered construction sites and bevies of workers still on task, the entire complex makes an impressive first impression, with artworks and fixtures built on a scale to dwarf most other hotels and resorts — it’s large enough to make exploring the whole resort a very tiring affair.”
